Manganese

Manganese is an essential mineral that is found in large quantities in plants and animals, but only in small amounts in human tissues.
The managanese supports many enzymatic reactions and plays an essential role in the formation of the GAG (glycosaminoglycans), and thus the formation of connective tissue, bones, blood clotting and sex hormones.

Low levels of this mineral in the blood may contribute to weakness and deformity of the bones. Some studies of individuals suffering from osteoarthritis have suggested that the incorporation of manganese in conjunction with glucosamine and chondroitin in the diet can reduce the pain associated with this condition.

In general, a diet deficient in manganese in animals appears to result in a variety of structural and physiological disorders, including growth retardation, skeletal deformities and cartilage, damage to the reproductive function, congenital ataxia, abnormalities in the optic nerve, damage to the metabolism of insulin and abnormal glucose tolerance, changes in the metabolism of lipoproteins and oxidant damage to defenses.
So far, there are no data that document the effects of a deficiency of manganese in the human diet. There is only one report of a man kept a diet with insufficient manganese for four months and which were administered at the same time of antacids containing magnesium. The symptoms that were presented were a decrease in sierocolesterolo, reduced growth of hair and nails, scaly dermatitis, weight loss, damage the blood clot. In another study, individuals fed a diet low in manganese showed low levels of sierocolesterolo, dermatitis, a slight anomaly in glucose tolerance and, in women, increased menstrual losses of manganese, calcium, iron and hemoglobin.
It is believed that these effects are due to the decrease in activity of glicosiltrasferasi, of which manganese is the main cofactor important in the synthesis of glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans. However, there is still no real evidence that an integration of nutritional manganese might have some effect in promoting the formation of bone or cartilage in individuals who do not have a deficiency of manganese. Only one study documents how the manganese, taken in combination with calcium, copper and zinc, can increase bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
A study on the combination of manganese with glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate, has documented the action adjuvant treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Finally, another study suggested the possible effectiveness of managanese in relieving some symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome such as anxiety, depression, irritability and mood swings.
However, more research is needed.

Do not use if you suffer from liver
Do not use if you are sensitive or allergic
During pregnancy and lactation does not exceed the recommended dose
Interaction with drugs:
Antacids and laxatives containing magnesium may decrease the absorption of manganese if taken associated with this integrator
The tetracycline may reduce the absorption of manganese
Supplements of calcium, iron and magnesium may reduce the absorption of manganese if taken together
No leavened bread, raw beans, peanuts, wheat, soy, spinach, sweet potatoes, rhubarb can decrease the absorption of manganese
